Costa del Silencio vs El Médano: Quiet Coves or Windsurf Town?

El Médano might be the most likeable town in southern Tenerife: a real, walkable beach town with a bohemian streak, a plaza full of cafés, and two of the island's best natural sandy beaches. Costa del Silencio, 15 minutes west, is quieter, more residential, more sheltered — and much better set up for villa holidays.

They're close enough that you can stay in either and enjoy both. Here's how to decide where to sleep.

The Wind — the Thing Nobody Mentions

The single most important practical difference. El Médano faces the open southeast and catches the trade winds nearly every afternoon in summer — that's why the world's kitesurfing elite trains there. It keeps the town cool, but it also means sand in your sandwiches, blustery terraces and evenings that feel cooler than they are.

Costa del Silencio sits on a more sheltered stretch of coast. Afternoons by the pool stay calm, and dinner on the terrace doesn't involve chasing napkins.

Verdict: Windsurfing or kitesurfing? El Médano, no debate. Pool days and terrace dinners? Costa del Silencio.

Beaches

El Médano wins the sand contest outright. Playa del Médano runs along the town with cafés at its back, and Playa de la Tejita — a wide, wild, protected beach under the Montaña Roja volcano — is arguably the best natural beach on the island.

Town Life and Eating

El Médano has the better food-and-stroll scene: the plaza, the boardwalk, pizza and tapas places, surf shops and Saturday markets. It's genuinely charming and much less "resort" than anywhere else in the south.

Accommodation — Where Villas Actually Are

Here's where the decision often makes itself. El Médano's compact centre is dominated by apartments; large houses with private pools are scarce and priced accordingly.
